It is hard to find a flat in the UK...

Find a flat can be a hard task, even more if you start your research once you arrived.

This is what happened to me, I had few look online before my departure to check the prices, the different locations… But I didn’t find anything. I decided to take a hotel for the first week and to find a flat when I will be in the UK. No more suspense, I stayed 3 weeks and a half at different hotels before finding something.

Find a flat: Here are some tips

However, during those 3 weeks, I had time to discover all the websites and the different techniques that could be useful for you to find a flat. Here is what I think is good to know

The first thing to do is to register on social media groups (Facebook, WhatsApp…) For example, if you come from France and you want to go to Glasgow you can go on “Français à Glasgow” (French in Glasgow). This kind of group exists for almost every nationalities and location. If you don't find the one that fits, you can still look for 'international student' groups !

The second thing you can do is signing up to different websites that gather a lot of property ad. In major cases, you can create a filter to target a precise type of flat and subscribe to a newsletter. You will then be notified when a property, that fits your criteria is added on the market.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of websites:

-       Zoopla

-       Spare room

-       Gumtree

-       Rightmove

-       On the market

-       And many more…

If you struggle to find something, do not wait too much to lower your expectations and obviously don’t forget student accommodations! These accommodations are a great way to meet people and also the occasion to get involved in many activities.

Last but not least, if you really want to find your own flat that is not in a student accommodation, make sure to open a UK bank account and try to find a UK-based guarantor. These two things are the reasons I didn’t find a flat when I arrived at the beginning of the year.

Good luck everyone 😉
